This Union officer’s kepi is a superior example of a definitively war period cap, made by the Civil War period hatter, Shute of Boston. Shute’s name is stamped inside the crown of this kepi. The hat remains in excellent condition, with its original bound brim, as well as its original chinstrap, secured to the hat by two, original Eagle I cuff size buttons. The interior of the cap is lined in polished, brown cotton. The body of the cap retains its deep blue, indigo dyed, original color and exhibits little to no insect damage or staining. This is a fine Union officer’s kepi.
